Southport Woodcarving Group has a membership of around 30 friendly, enthusiastic amateur woodcarvers,
a third of which are women.
We meet every Wednesday afternoon, 1:30pm – 4:30pm, between September and May, in the United Reformed Church Hall, Grosvenor Road, Birkdale (opposite Smedley Hydro, and on the No 15 bus route) There is also reasonable car parking.
New members, including beginners are always welcome and are invited to call in on any of our meetings. Membership is payable in advance per term. From January 2009 this will work out at £2 per session and includes tea and biscuits. The Group has a good range of relevant carving books and magazines and a selection of tools for new members to use before purchasing their own.
The group usually holds an annual open afternoon and Exhibition of carvings, which is open to the public and admission is free.
Our Exhibition this year was held on 11th October, for the first time on a Saturday. We are looking forward to new members joining us in the New Year as a result. Also, several visitors from out of area were keen to look for a group nearer to where they live so they will be able to take up the craft. For more information visit our show page.
Also, for the first time, we were invited to join the Red Rose Woodturning Club from Bilsborrow in their Marquee at the Southport Flower Show in August. This was very successful and we hope to attend again. For those interested in woodturning go to www.nfwg.co.uk/clubs for plenty of information.
The Group also meets locally for a Christmas lunch in early December, when family and friends are invited to join us and we have an informal party afternoon at the last meeting before Christmas.
The first meeting of 2009 will be Wednesday, January 14th, starting at 1:30pm as usual.
